June is migraine awareness month. I've decided to send 7 tips, one each day for one week to do my part in raising awareness within us. For it is within ourselves that we need to find strength, perseverance and endurance. We need to build resilience.

Tip #6: We Are Not Our Migraines

We are not just our migraines - we are much more than that. Many years ago, at the beginning of this pain journey I went for a Shiatsu massage and when I said I had migraines he said “You must not own them. The very word itself 'migraine - my - mine' shows ownership. Once you own it, you will never let it go.”

I was shocked. At that time I believed I could heal them myself. I had full faith they would disappear completely from my life. I had no intention of 'owning' these horrible things.

I heard this poem the other day, and I thought “we are so much more than just once piece of the puzzle in life.” My life has many pieces, and the migraines are just one small piece. Ok, they are not that small, but there is positive thinking again (denial).

I asked God For ...

"I asked for strength,
And God gave me difficulties to make me strong;

I asked for wisdom,
And God gave me problems to learn to solve;

I asked for prosperity,
And God gave me brain and brawn to work;

I asked for courage,
And God gave me dangers to overcome;

I asked for love,
And God gave me people to help;

And God gave me opportunities.

I received nothing I wanted.
I received everything I needed."

It’s much easier these days to just be real about this condition. It’s not so easy with people who do not understand that this is a difficult and painful neurological medical condition. Many people I know still dismiss it as a headache, and I have known them for twenty years.

I'd like to recommend reading Cynthia Perkin's Mindfulness Over Migraines e-book that explains the science behind mindfulness and why it helps migraines. And she explains the method step by step that she uses to eliminate her migraines in 15 minutes. Yes, you read that correctly ... eliminate in 15 minutes. It will be the best $6.99 you ever spend!
