Can Pain Reprocessing Therapy Offer Migraine Relief?


Day 7 Highlights


I’ll try to keep it brief today… I know you’re busy! Yesterday's interview was on the area of research I’ve been studying and testing out myself for over 4 years. And I think it's really important to share.

Here are a few key points from the interview with Alan Gordon, LCSW as PRP applies to migraine:

For people with a low stress threshold – like if you have 4 migraine attacks per week or chronic headaches – your autonomic nervous system becomes so dysregulated because of all the pain and fear and preoccupation that one of the most important things is to learn to regulate your system more regularly.

So, it's not just about treating the pain when it comes on but also about how we treat our system. Examples – putting pressure on yourself (to get things done!!), criticizing yourself, constantly scaring yourself, ruminating over things or being addicted to problem solving mode (or working!).

He said our internal behaviors can keep us in the state of fight or flight.

Fear complicates the pain cycle.

Any negative emotion can reinforce to the brain that it is dangerous - “this is bad, we need to get away from it.” All of this forms what is called a conditioned response where the brain creates an association between certain physical activities and the onset of pain.

From what I understand the brain can make mistakes in this pain feedback loop. And we can get false messages.
